Representante principal de un punto de vista nuevo y crítico sobre el paisaje estaounidense. En 1965 obtiene el doctorado en la Universidad del Sur de California (Los Ángeles). Desde 1967 trabaja como fotógrafo independiente y escritor. Recibe numerosos galardones, entre otros, la beca Guggenheim (1973-1980) y el Premio Internacional de Fotografía de la Hasselblad Foundation. Robert Adams se ha convertido, durante más de cuatro décadas, en un autor fotográfico prolífico, con numerosos libros publicados, muchos de ellos con múltiples ediciones como The New West. Su trabajo ha sido, desde de la década de 1970 hasta nuestros días, expuesto en numerosas ocasiones. Algunas exposiciones importantes fueron: Photographs by Robert Adams and Emmet Gowin (1971), Mirrors and Windows: American Photography since 1960 (1978), ambas en el MoMA de Nueva York. Exposiciones en solitario tales Turning Back (2005) en la Casa de Arte de Munich y el San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Robert Adams: The Place We Live, A Retrospective Selection of Photographs que desde 2010 ha transitado en espacios tales como la Vancouver Art Gallery, el Denver Art Museum, la Yale University Art Gallery, el Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia en Madrid, o en el Jeu de Paume parisino, London’s Media Space o el Fotomuseum Winterthur en Suiza. Entre 2000 y 2005 la Yale University Art Gallery adquirió el master set con todas las fotografías de Adams y se ha convertido en la institución que preservará el acervo de este artista.
